Sail GP Heads to Bermuda, Chicago. Canada Next?
Dec 24, 2021
Sail GP has been capturing attention thanks to high performance, some noteworthy collisions and awesome starts. Now that there is a Canadian team led by Toronto investment entrepreneur and lifelong sailor, Fred Pye, in the plans for 2022, perhaps we will also see an event in Canada in years to come.
For its third season, SailGP returns with the addition of new teams, bringing the sport’s best roster of athletes together and welcoming the two new franchise teams from Canada and Switzerland. They join teams from Australia, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Japan, New Zealand, Spain and the United States. SailGP Season 3 will host ten events with seven grand prix taking place in 2022 and the remainder in the first quarter of 2023, with the final event taking place in April 2023.
Hamilton Princess & Beach Club will kick off Season 3 of SailGP as the host hotel and title partner for the Bermuda Sail Grand Prix presented by Hamilton Princess on May 14 and 15, 2022. This is the second consecutive year the luxury resort has hosted the global racing league with its top prize of US$1 million.
“Alongside the athleticism displayed in SailGP, Hamilton Princess & Beach Club joins SailGP’s commitment to climate action and a cleaner future with its Climate Action Charter and Race for the Future initiative,” said Tim Morrison, general manager of facility.
From its inception in 2019, SailGP has measured, reduced and contributed its carbon footprint and has set an ambitious target of 55 percent carbon footprint reduction based on science by 2025. The event also commits to being fully powered by nature by 2025 on shore and on the water.
From Bermuda, the fleet will head to a new SailGP destination in North America at Chicago’s Navy Pier on Lake Michigan in June. Both Bermuda and Chicago are two year deals that will see the league return in Season 4.
