BVI Spring Regatta beats the odds

As you have read Hurricane Irma blew the British Virgin Islands to pieces. But the Spring Regatta was pulled together despite the obstacles that confronted it. Racers came from everywhere, including Rob Butler’s Canadian entry Touch2Play Racing.

Rob is from Collingwood ON and the crew are from all over Ontario including Sarnia, Wheatley, Windsor and Niagara Falls as well as neighbouring Wilson and Youngstown, NY. The cartoon beaver on the mainsail and on the stand-out pink crew shirts lets everyone know the boat is definitely from Canada.

The memorable prizes for the regatta were re-purposed from garbage created by the hurricane. Third place winners got trophies made of scrap rope, second place, including Touch2Play in the CSA class, received ice buckets made of broken mast segments and the winners’ awards were flower pots decorated with window glass rubble.

This 3rd place and all the prizes were made from scrap! Instead, the money went to rebuild junior sailing.

The 2011 edition of the Mobility Cup began today with clinics for the sailors and the Opening Ceremonies. Hosted by The Royal Hamilton Yacht Club and the Burlington Sailing & Boating Club this year marks the 21st anniversary edition of the event.

Chester, Nova Scotia is once again home to the famous Chester Race Week, being held August 15-18. This race has been in existence for over 100 years, starting originally with fishermen’s sailboats. This year’s registrations are at a healthy 143 boats with the addition of another race course. In sailing circles Chester Race Week is one of the great regattas, full on racing, great parties and the prettiest scenery anywhere! Race Chairman John Curry opened the regatta proclaiming the early morning fog would clear and sure to his word the skies turned blue and a great day of racing took place. ”Conditions couldn’t have been better” said Curry who was on the alpha course, “after a very short delay a fresh southerly breeze came in and delivered a full day of racing”.

Our boat heels and bow waves crash over her. She rides the waves like a rollercoaster gone berserk. Spray like shards of glass glitters in the tropical sunlight.

"High side," yells the skipper, a seaman from Petit Martinique with the evocative name of Emmanuel Bethel.

We scramble to starboard while "Savvy" overtakes another boat. It's stocky instead of graceful, solid instead of sleek. But it, too, slices the sea.
