Miss Supertest in Spotlight Again with Commemorative Stamps

The national unveiling of two stamps Monday, commemorating the three-peat Harmsworth Trophy win by Miss Supertest III, capped off a very successful celebratory weekend in Picton.

The Canadian hydroplane Miss Supertest III captured her third Harmsworth Trophy just kilometres away from the 50th anniversary show site of Loch Sloy Holdings (the former Camp Picton) which donated a hangar for the event.

Dignitaries in attendance included MP Prince Edward Hastings Daryl Kramp, MPP Prince Edward-Hastings Leona Dombrowsky, Prince Edward County Mayor Peter Mertens and members of county council. Special guests were Miss Supertest III owners Jim and Beverly Thompson, and Miss Supertest III pilot the late Bob Hayward's sister-in-law Doris, her son Mark and grandson Cody.

Kramp said he had personal interest in this proud day for all Canadians and particularly the County, as his parents were Supertest dealers.

"I watched the races as a youth. I remember it like yesterday," he told the large audience. He noted the boat is one of the few non-human inductees into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame and represents "Canadiana at its best."

Dombrowsky honoured owner Thompson's commitment to creating a Canadian legend.

"This is a tribute to the people of the County who mounted the campaign to have the stamp created," she said. "You are keeping the legend alive. Miss Supertest III will be known around the world."

Mayor Mertens paid recognition to the Miss Supertest III 50th anniversary committee and particularly John Lyon who ensured the designation of Hayward Long Reach was made official.

Canada Post Director of Operations for Eastern Ontario, Natalie Bolton, thanked Thompson for opening his archives and sharing his expertise for design artist Ivan Novotny. "I believe the stamps accurately capture the speed and grace of Miss Supertest III. Our stamp program showcases Canada to the world,'' she said.

The stamp unveiling followed a two day open house showcasing race boating in Canada at Loch Sloy. The final event was a premiere showing of a documentary on Miss Supertest III at the Regent Theatre, produced by Peter Lockyer of History Lives Here Inc.
