Now that the boat is away, and you’ve read Sailing in Canada’s lates issue, it’s time to head to the bookshelf and get primed for next season’s battles.
Here are some titles from the Nautical Mind Bookstore on Toronto’s waterfront to keep the juices flowing.
Performance Sailing and Racing
by Colgate, Steve
In his latest publication, Colgate explains how to improve your sailing and push your boat to higher–but safer–speeds, whether you race or cruise. Getting a boat to perform as it was designed–with grace and an ease of motion–and knowing how to sail it fast can get you out of tricky situations more quickly and bring you to your destination sooner. A textbook used throughout the Colgate Sailing School network, “Performance Sailing and Racing” will help novices start racing and improve quickly, but even veteran sailors will pick up tips and tricks for success. End-of-chapter quizzes reinforce what’s been taught.
Tuning to Win
by Pinnell, Ian
Pinnell a multiple champion describes how to gain the extra margin of boatspeed that will move you up the fleet. Illustrated with photos and diagrams, his book clearly explains what each control does, how to set up your boat for light wind beating, and how to adjust for different wind strengths and directions. The sections on skills and troubleshooting take things even further.

One of the great Olympic sailors, Elvstrom devised a unique, bird’s-eye-view approach to explaining the Racing Rules in detail. Discussions have been updated to conform to new Rules, and each is cross-referenced to relevant case studies provided by World Sailing (formerly ISAF). As in previous editions, a set of plastic boats is included, for use during protest hearings, as well as the complete new Rules. A quick-reference guide highlights the latest changes.
Fortunately for SinC readers, this book is on sale at Nautical Mind, perhaps because we are midway through its currency.
