2018 Sail Canada Women’s Keelboat Championship Presented by driveHG.ca at Mimico Cruising Club

Women's Keelboat on Lake Ontario

Sept 27, 2018

Thirteen teams from Ontario and Quebec competed in Humber Bay to try and capture the title of top female keelboat crew away from reigning queen Melodie Gummer, but it was not to be! Once again, Melodie and her crew of J. Wilby and Susan Fraser came out on top in a regatta plagued by light winds.

Melodie had some tough competition this year from a young team out of her o club, Kingston YC, with a margin win of only one point. Ironically the practice race on Thursday had winds well over 15 knots with a good swell that challenged some of the teams that are used to sailing on rivers and smaller lakes. Thursday also included an on-land clinic run by Kevin Piper. Thomas Fogh continued with two sessions on Saturday and on-water coaching for the entire regatta.

Race Officer Janet Geisberger did a great job squeaking out four races on Friday September 14th and again on Sunday September 16th to get in a total of 8 races. Saturday was very light and when the wind finally came in during the early afternoon the AP on shore came down, only to have the wind die out completely when all the teams arrived on the start line ready to go. By the end of the regatta, the competition had really heated up and the top six teams shifted positions on every race, which made for great competition.

The Canadian Shark Association voted last year to provide loaner boats for all competitors that needed them gratis. Not only were they provided free of charge, but the owners either delivered the boats themselves or helped with the delivery, offering pointers and help with everything from proper trim to boat set up.

Every morning featured a Meet and Great with fresh homemade muffins by the Mimico Cruising Club chef, yogurt, fruit and coffee courtesy of G.H. Hogle. The hospitality just kept coming with sponsors Steam Whistle Beer and TAG Ontario Craft vodka providing refreshments every afternoon after racing. A great sit-down dinner with dancing was the hit of the weekend on the Saturday night and no one went home hungry on Sunday during the awards when pizza and sliders turned up.

Big thanks go out to Debbie Jeffcoatt and her volunteer team for rounding up great sponsors, swag and door prizes for just about every competitor! Truly a monumental task that was done extremely well.
