News: Solar boats heading to Toronto

They’re a real thing in Europe and next year Toronto will have a Solar Boat Race right in Toronto Harbour. The Races will run Along the waterfront from Jack Layton Ferry Terminal to HTO Park.

The event, likely in August, will be the first North American races from the international organization Solar Sport One Solar Sport One, which has been operating solar boat races in Europe since 2014. They put on six races a year in Holland as well as the Monaco Solar and Energy Boat Challenge at the Yacht Club de Monaco.

Solar BoatsThe Toronto Solar Boat Races are presented in association with SSO and races are run under the organization’s auspices.

The Toronto organizer/producer is planning on six university teams and six high school teams that build and race their own solar boats under the Solar Sport One rules. Currently several teams have signed up

Clean energy is the number one idea in the consumer/tech world and this event will illustrate how much really interesting boating is possible with the sun as fuel. The races will be fast, fun, educational and eco-smart! Annotate your calendar.
