Report: LOSHRS Final Weekend to Dalhousie Yacht Club

The 2024 LOSHRS race to Port Dalhousie (and the next day back to Port Credit YC) was notable in a few unusual ways, not least of which was the start of the race being delayed – almost cancelled – due to a rolling fog that made it difficult – at times impossible – to see the starting line.

Eventually, a somewhat clear window appeared allowing the race committee to start the race. Participants were expected to, and did, avoid each other and with little ado headed across the lake.  It ended up the fog was a shoreline effect and dissipated within a few miles offshore. The wind picked up resulting in, as more than one participant said, ‘champagne sailing’ – up to ten knots off the beam/close reach and flat water.

a visit from the pine warblers

In a rather enchanting event, the fleet was visited by some number of what we believe to be Pine Warblers. There was at least two (as seen on our boat at the same time), possibly more, visiting many boats in the race mid-lake and cleaning dock spiders and other ‘yummies’ from the decks.

The race back to PCYC Sunday was forecast to be very light winds (one to three knots meaning a 12-hour plus crossing) and some boats – including us – choose the iron main over empty sails.  It does appear, however, that wind did arise as most boats who did participate finished in in under seven hours. A  fine weekend to end LOOR’s 2024 on-water events, with many thanks to DYC for their hospitality!

LOOR Awards Banquet rescheduled to Friday, November 15

The Lake Ontario Offshore Racing (LOOR) Awards Banquet will now be held on Friday, November 15, 2024, at Port Credit Yacht Club (PCYC), 115 Lakefront Promenade, Mississauga, Ontario L5E 3G6.

The trophies will be presented for the Lake Ontario 300 Challenge Race (LO300), Susan Hood Trophy Race (SHTR), and Lake Ontario Shorthanded Racing Series (LOSHRS).

LOSHRS Flags will be available at the Banquet or for separate pickup that Friday.

Watch for further details on the Banquet in the next newsletter or at www.loor.ca. Since 1975, the Lake Ontario Short Handed Racing Series (LOSHRS) Committee has been organizing multi-division single-and double-handed distance and offshore keelboat races of all sizes and ratings on Lake Ontario.

With six races organized annually and each race attracting approximately 50 sailboats, as many as 130+ entries participate each year.

Whether you opt to race single- or double-handed, you’ll experience the thrill of sailing short-handed and enjoy the unique camaraderie of fellow short-handed sailors.
