The Beneteau First 36.7 is not a new design. The hull was drawn by Bruce Farr at the close of the last millennium and was pointed at the dying days of IMS racing. Who knew that when the boat hit North America in 2001 that it would become one of the largest One Design Fleets of the last generation.
The Niagara 2022 Jeux du Canada Games just ended and has Paralympic Sailing on the schedule. Racing was in the Paralympic 2.4 mR class, an excellent boat that allows athletes with a disability including wheelchair athletes to compete at the highest level.
In mid-September, seven Canadian teams and 21 sailors from Ontario participated in the 2022 Shark Worlds in Bregenz, Austria at the Yacht Club Bregenz. The participating crews represented NOLSC, KYC, BQYC, RCYC, WYC and NYC.
Cam Cochrane, Commodore of Ashbridges Bay Yacht Club, multi-time C&C 34 fleet champion at the height of Lake Ontario Racing Council’s 50-strong Saturday one-design races and mentor to many racing sailors passed on September 11.
Team Notorious is a National Yacht Club (Toronto) – based team, running two boats and winning extensively over the past decade and especially this summer.
We were saddened to hear of the recent death of noted C&C Yachts designer Rob Ball. Rob succumbed to injuries suffered in a recent fall on September 9th at the age of 79 at his home in New Bedford, Mass.
This year, Ashbridges Bay Yacht Club in Toronto has opened up the Summerville race on September 24, 2022 to every club again and it will also be free for every boat with a PHRF certificate.

Will Keilty is Canada’s youngest ever National Champion. Last weekend he won the 2022 Optimist Dinghy Canadian Championships at Lunenburg Yacht Club held August 22-26.
The fifth event of SailGP Season 3, the Range Rover France Sail Grand Prix, took place this weekend in Saint-Tropez. Racing got underway mid-afternoon on Saturday with some of the most exciting conditions that the SailGP teams had ever experienced.
Local favourites Antonia and Georgia Lewin-LaFrance from Chester, NS were the top Canadians at the 2022 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 World Championships which ended last Sunday in St. Margarets Bay, Nova Scotia, as they came up with a 14th-place finish.
Last week in conjunction with the Canada’s Cup, Toronto’s Royal Canadian Yacht Club welcomed competitors, family, and supporters from around the World for the inaugural Warrior Sailing Cup, which hosted six teams from the Netherlands, Australia, USA (2 teams), and Canada (2 teams).
The 26th Canada’s Cup finished last weekend on Saturday, September 3rd after three days of racing hosted by Royal Canadian Yacht Club (RCYC).
There are lots of reasons to become a member of the Salty Dawg Sailing Association but the best reason right now is that we are expecting a record number of boats in our rally to the Caribbean this fall and everyone is looking for crew.
The competitions will be held in St. Margaret’s Bay, Nova Scotia from August 31 to September 5 and the top Olympic sailors in the world in the 49er (men’s pair) and 49erFX (women’s pair) Olympic classes as well as in Nacra 17 (mixed pairs) will get a chance to shine before a national audience.
