During my summer judging, I have heard some strange things about the hails people expect to hear. I thought that I should look at the rulebook, and see which hails are required.
It’s been a quiet couple of years for Dragon sailing in North America. In 2020, most events, including Club Racing, were cancelled until late in the summer. But by 2021, a full set of local events were held. With the US-Canada border now open in both directions (with some restrictions), we expect 2022 to be better.
The 2022 Iceboats US Nationals are currently being held in place of the 2022 North American Championship, which was cancelled because of the pandemic. Six Canadians are competing. “On Deck” conversation with an iceboat racer who was a medalist in sailing at the 1963 Pan American Games: André Baby.
This discussion is based on a situation that took place at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (held in the summer of 2021) and some local youth regattas. When I first started to race, if you broke a rule, your only option was to drop out (or be protested out) of the race. This was a severe penalty for a simple incident.
