CORK/Sail Kingston to host 2013 Laser North American Championships

CORK/Sail Kingston has been selected to host the 2013 Laser, Laser Radial and Laser 4.7 North American Championships, July 24-28, 2013.

The Laser, a Canadian designed dinghy, is the largest dinghy class in the world, with more than 200,000 boats built. Furthermore, both the men’s Laser and the women’s Laser Radial are Olympic class events. The event will attract sailors from all over North America, from youth participants in the Radial and 4.7 to members of the Canadian National Sailing Team. The event is also open to competitors from outside North America.

“The Laser and Laser Radial dinghies are the core of Olympic sailing. Along with their smaller sister, the Laser 4.7, the dinghies are central to the development of young Canadian sailors following the performance pathway as defined by the Long Term Athlete Development system. The hosting of the North American Championship in Kingston dovetails perfectly with the Canadian Yachting Association’s development plans as we look forward to the experience that our sailors will gain at this major event.” Paddy Boyd, Executive Director of the Canadian Yachting Association.

There are 250 boats expected to compete in the event and with the addition of coaches, officials, volunteers and visitors, it will be a major summer event for sailing in Kingston.

The 2012 CORK events include an exceptional line-up of North American and Canadian Championships. The season kicks off August 10-12, with Optimist CORK and the Canadian Windsurfer Championship. CORK International will follow on August 13-16, including the Laser Youth North American Championship. CORK OCR on August 18-22 will include the 49er North American Championship, the 29er North American Championship, the Finn North American Championship and the National Single Handed Championship (male and female). August 23-26 will be the CORK One-Design Regatta, including the Soling North American Championship, the J22 Canadian Championship, the F18 Canadian Championship and the 505 Eastern Canadian Championship. Lastly, the Albacore Canadian Championship, September 20-23, and Fall CORK, September 22-23 will round out the 2012 CORK regatta season.
