2011 Sail for Gold – First Day a long one for Canadians

The first day of racing at the 2011 Sail for Gold Regatta is finally over after many postponements across all fleets as a persistent NW based breeze stuck around longer than anticipated, before skies cleared giving way to SW conditions that were idyllic albeit very late in the day.

Luckily every course was successful in getting at least one race in for the day. Canadians are getting off to a good start with Star team Richard Clarke & Tyler Bjorn placing third in their one race of the day as well as Laser sailor David Wright placing third in the yellow fleet. In the 2.4mR class, there were 2 races and a close battle between Canada's Bruce Millar and reigning Paralympic Gold Medallist Paul Tingley sitting fifth and sixth overall. Skud sailors McRoberts and Hopkin are currently in seventh after 2 races. Elsewhere, the highlight score of the day could well have been Greg Clunies with an eighth in the Laser fleet, arguably his best international race to date.

The 2011 edition of the Mobility Cup began today with clinics for the sailors and the Opening Ceremonies. Hosted by The Royal Hamilton Yacht Club and the Burlington Sailing & Boating Club this year marks the 21st anniversary edition of the event.

With more than 60 disabled athletes from five countries including Australia, the Netherlands, the U.K., U.S.A and Canada vying for a variety of trophies, this year is expected to be one of good racing on Hamilton harbor and great socializing on the patio of the RHYC.

2011 J/105 Canadian Championship wrap-up

The 2011 J/105 Canadian Championship, the premier racing event of the J/105 Fleet 4 season was awarded to Dave Shaver's Retern, also winner of the 2007 edition. This year's Championship war flag was well earned in one of the closest events for the season. Second place went to Jamaica Me Crazy, last year's winner whilst third place went to Hey Jude.

The three day event was the perfect test for J/105 sailing out of Toronto, with variable wind conditions from moderate (Friday and Sunday) to high waves Saturday, current and oscillating wind directions, testing sailing and strategy of all the top crews.

Heading into the last day here at Chester Race Week, there are some very exciting races for first place in both Distance Divisions and the Bravo 1 Division. Yesterday’s weather brought in cloud and sun, but very light winds, which some of the fleet found to be very challenging. However, the leaders always seem to rise to the top. Results heading in the final day of racing have many boats vying neck and neck for trophies and bragging rights.
