Halifax SailGP – Who Knew?

Apr 3, 2024

By John Morris

Who knew that Canada would be the world’s most popular sailing nation? That’s the way it has turned out if the demand for SailGP spots is an indicator. Tickets for the Rockwool Canada SailGP went on sale on March 27th and by the 28th, we were already getting signals it would be a sellout.

On the web, you could immediately see pleas for tickets:

“Hello. If anyone has extra waterfront reserve tickets for June 2 please let me know. Looking for 5 tickets.”

“I was just about to order tickets and the waterfront reserve says unavailable but not sold out. Do you know if all 1200 tickets are sold out?”
Anyone know the answer?

Looks like under 49’ byob is sold out too!

The Sailing in Canada inbox is getting questions from far and wide. SailGP fans, some from far away in the US, hope to be on site for the Halifax event and some are already running into a wall in their search for chairs.

I contacted SailGP and sensed some happy surprise at their end but sold out appears to be the reality.

“We had unprecedented demand for the Halifax tickets and solid out within an hour. The last few events, Sydney, Christchurch and Abu Dhabi also sold out, but not nearly as quickly!”

Even the CBC Nova Scotia has discovered the event. Phil Robertson did this interview. Have a look here: https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/1.7159189

When discussions began around having an event in Canada, few of us anticipated it would mushroom in popularity to this extent. Clearly, Halifax is about to host the sailing event of the year! If you’re a lucky ticket or BYOBoat flag holder, your friends may have to mitigate their envy by watching on TV.
