Georgian Bay Regatta Celebrates 36th Anniversary this Summer
Apr 13, 2022
Social activities are the hallmark of the GBR
Once again, the Georgian Bay Regatta is the sailing event of the summer on Georgian Bay – not to be missed!
Now in its 36th year, the GBR will take place on the west side of the Bay, visiting the picturesque ports of Meaford, Lion’s Head, and Wiarton, as well as two spectacular anchorages. Six races are planned over four days, including four long distance and two course races.
Not only does the GBR attract boats from Georgian Bay, but Lake Simcoe and Lake Huron sailors regularly participate. Occasionally, Lake Ontario sailors make the GBR part of their summer plans to cruise the Bay or the North Channel.
Social activities are a hallmark of the GBR, and this year will be no exception. Festivities begin with a Meet N’ Greet at Reef Boat Club in Meaford the evening of Wednesday July 27th and end with an Awards Dinner in Wiarton on Sunday July 31st. Participants will enjoy a rafting party on the first night at anchor and a beach BBQ on the second night.
The fleet is divided into high and low PHRF-LO handicap divisions for white and flying sails. A more relaxed cruising division is also offered for those who like to race but don’t feel comfortable with the more intense competition and challenging starts of traditional racing.
Trophies are awarded for winners in all divisions. Family involvement is encouraged and is recognized by an award for outstanding family participation. Also, awards are given for best club and best new regatta entrant.
An informal feeder race will take place before the regatta for boats coming from the Midland Bay area on July 27th.
More information and the Notice of Race is available at georgianbayregatta.ca, or by contacting the regatta co-chairs Jesse Woolnough or Sarah Burke.
