Events: Broad Reach’  Spring Thaw Melts the Winter Blues and Raises $$!

Apr 10, 2024

If you weren’t at Broad Reach’s 34th annual Spring Thaw last Saturday, you missed one heck of a party, the biggest and best Thaw yet!

The East Coast-themed kitchen party at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club buzzed with excitement, the oysters were shucked to perfection, and the crowd was decked out in maritime-inspired outfits, ready for an evening of music, memories, and generosity.

East Coast Oysters, chowder and fish dinners delighted the gang

The purpose of the evening was fundraising for Broad Reach Canada youth programs which has now evolved into  an umbrella cause encompassing youth and sail training from all over the country.  At the Kitchen Party, the enthusiasm from partners from Quebec, Ottawa, and many organizations who partner to assist youth. Participating youth are drawn from almost 40 social agencies in the GTA and beyond.

Individuals and groups attending the event made good on their enthusiasm shouting out donations that mounted to significant funds.  The money goes, among other things, to paying tuition for young people to participate in tall ship programs and  the many other sailing activity designed to assist young people who would otherwise not be exposed to the benefits of on-the-water activities.

Fazeelur Rahman

One of the night’s most heartwarming moments came from Fazeelur Rahman, a past Broad Reach participant, who had the room in stitches and misty-eyed all at once. Sharing stories from his time with Broad Reach a decade ago, he reminded us all of why we do what we do – changing lives through sailing and challenge.

Guest speaker Gord Laco contributed a case of Epifanes varnish to Broad Reach CEO Marguerite Pyron, for sprucing up the vessels

Then came our keynote speaker, Gord Laco, who traced the importance and impact of sail training as a means to positively influence performance in young people from its roots in navy life saving.  Gord reminded the crowd of the importance of fostering resilience, community, and courage in young people.

Press Gang belted the shanties

Of course, what’s a Broad Reach event without some sea shanties and folk music? As always, Pressgang Mutiny and Ian Bell delivered an electrifying performance, turning the evening into a full-blown East Coast shindig! (Because honestly, who doesn’t love a good sea shanty?)

The silent auction was a massive success, with guests walking away with big-ticket treasures, all while contributing to

BRC’s youth programming. Special thanks go to Dave Keystone, whose Fund-a-Need segment brought in over $10,000 – a true testament to the power of our community.
