Bruce Millar Wins Royal Vic’s Annual Ice Bowl

Jan 11, 2024

The 2.4mR class is an unusual one in that it is a World Sailing international class raced by tall and short, wide and thin, old and young, male and female and able and disabled all with scratch scoring, no handicaps!

The Ice Bowl is a one day 2.4mR annual event held on Dec 29, conceived by David Bleakney. David contended that we should be sure to race in every month of the year, because in Victoria you can! Naming the event the Ice Bowl seemed fitting.  The inaugural event was held in December 2018. After David’s passing in 2019 the regatta was renamed in his memory.

David joined RVicYC in 1995. After spending some years racing a Laser, then his Cal 20 Bluebird, he bought his first 2.4mR in 2011 and became one of the founding fleet members.  It was not long before he was promoting the boat and offering to get anyone who was remotely interested out for a sail in his 2.4mR.  As well as promoting the 2.4mR class, David was an active volunteer around the Club.  He spent many Wednesday afternoons sitting near the Crew bench introducing guests to skippers who could take them Wednesday Night racing. Even the morning he died, he was making phone calls promoting the 2.4mR fleet.

Bruce Millar , member of our National Team won this year’s event.
