Metro Marine Modellers Plan for 2024 and Toronto Boat Show

Have you ever been interested in trying model boat racing? Accessible, competitive, and inclusive, 2024 is a fantastic year to dive into the sport. The Metro Marine Modellers is an active and passionate group of radio control boaters and boat modellers that are eager to share their pastime with prospective members.

After a successful 2023 regatta at the Toronto International Boat Show, they are excited to announce their return in 2024. Running an indoor sailing regatta with RCYC (Royal Canadian Yacht Club) sailors, this is an excellent opportunity for those interested to come see what the Metro Marine Modellers all are about (and all the fun they get up to!). The boats will be supplied, so anyone interested in learning more, including beginners is welcome. The sailing races will be taking place at the indoor lake, from 6-7 PM on January 23, 24 and 25, at the 2024 Toronto International Boat Show.

This is a sophisticated sport – as members of the Canadian Radio Yachting Association (CRYA) they divide their fleets into three divisions: sail, scale and static (model building). With sail as the most popular division, members meet at the Lakeshore Promenade Marina in Mississauga, every weekend from May to October to race! In addition to the weekly races, there are regattas and championships taking place throughout the season thanks to strong partnerships with Ontario’s sailing community. The Oakville Yacht Squadron has traditionally invited local radio control sailors to sail on New Year’s Day, a fun tradition, and the CRYA National IOM (International One Metre) Championships are to be held at The Kingston Yacht Club.

Outside of the racing, it is a space for model boat builders, with many members creating a variety of fascinating and challenging models, often with the support of other members. Add in regular group activities and you’ve got yourself the perfect haven for those who enjoy model boating year-round.

Why try competitive radio controlled sailing? “The club is a not for profit organization and is incorporated to provide opportunities for people who enjoy model boating to come together as friends and to foster and share all aspects of model building and boating”, and MMM stays true to their constitution. Model boats are accessibly priced and require a relatively minimal financial commitment in comparison to their full-scale counterparts. They are easy to assemble, and provide an outlet to enjoy boat racing, building, and a community of boaters.
