Cedric (Ced) Gyles passed at his home in The Blue Mountains, Ontario, on Sunday September 24, 2023, at the age of 96. Best known most recently to the sailing community aboard his 8-Metre Norseman, he entered the class back in 1953 with the Fife 8-Metre Concerto and was awarded Honorary Life Membership by the International 8-Metre Class Association in 2010 for his contribution. He served as Commodore of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club 1985-1986.

Ced was born and raised in Vancouver. He joined Price Waterhouse in 1946 for four years as an articling chartered accountant. During this time, he met the love of his life, Barbara Martin.

Ced took a leave of absence from Price Waterhouse to play professional football for the Calgary Stampeders’ 1948 season earning an annual salary of $500.

Ced and Barb travelled throughout the world for sailing events, for both business and pleasure. Sailing took them to Australia and New Zealand for an America’s Cup.

A celebration of Cedric’s life will be held at the Toronto Ski Club on Sunday, October 22, 2023. A second Celebration of Life will be held at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club in Toronto next spring at a date to be determined.
