Cruel Jane 2.0 Takes 4th at Etchells Worlds

I have been really fortunate to be able to sail on and with some great sailing teams. Actually just got back from the Viper 640 worlds with another Canadian team of friends.

When the opportunity came up last month to sail with Andrew Macrae (Ontario Yachts and Etchells builder) and Luke Lawrence for the 2023 Etchells Worlds in Miami, I knew we would have a great opportunity to finish high in the fleet. Andrew and I have sailed around each other but never on the same boat.

We arrived a couple days early to try and jell as a team. It’s hard in a short time to get the choreography down and simple sailing language that everyone says slightly different. We all sail Etchells a lot so knowing the Doyle sails we chose to be fast and easy to set up our goal was just get a good clean start with an open lane so the boat speed could work everything else out.

This almost worked till we got an OCS-U flag. After that we had to be more careful on the starting line and probably too cautious for the last four races. We found ourselves in the lead after day one and close for the remainder finishing up the worlds in 4th overall. We as a team got stronger and stronger as the week progressed on and off the water, It was a blast!

Full results for the 62 boat Etchells fleet can be found HERE.

Off to Antigua for race week on Hooligan then straight back into the Sarnia loft!
