Steerers Regatta draws a crowd
July 26, 2018
Optimists everywhere!
During the week, more than 430 youngsters in over 220 boats descended upon Port Credit YC July 19 and 20 for the annual Steerers Regatta. For more than 40 years, this regatta has been the forum for sailing schools to bring their various dinghies to PCYC for two fun-filled days of competition.
PRO Paul Brennan, PC Chairman Katie Nicoll and regatta chairman Alison Jones put together a fantastic team of close to 100 volunteers to accommodate these young people and introduce many of them to racing as well as sailing at a different venue for the first time. In total, 27 sailing schools participated from across the GTA and down the lake, to Lake Erie, and many small lakes across the province and teams from the United States.

In total the race management team banged off 50 races on four courses to accommodate 29ers, 420 spinnakers, Radials, Optimists, RS Fevas and RS Visions. A much smaller course accommodated the Optimist Green and 420 White Sail beginner sailors.

The winds and sunshine were perfect, ranging from 4-10 knots over the two days. Seas were moderate, but began to build by the end of the day on Friday as the wind moved to the east.
