Excitement is building for the 2011 Lake Ontario Challenge

alt

Preparations for the 2011 Lake Ontario 300 are well underway as boats continue to register for this challenging and exciting race. Last year the fleet was hit with severe storms early on forcing many to retire. Most of these boats are returning this year to complete the course and 'deal with unfinished business'.

The race begins on Saturday July 16th and the participants will race in a range of categories including, single handed, double handed and fully crewed divisions. Boats competing vary from fast, sleek 40 foot sleds to more traditional racer-cruisers and multi-hulls. This event provides the perfect venue for all levels of racers.

The 300 nautical mile circumnavigation starts at Port Credit Yacht Club heads east and rounds Main Duck Island, then heads south to Oswego NY where it turns west along the south shore to the Niagara River mark before heading to the finish line back at Port Credit Yacht Club.
The race is a test of preparation, teamwork, navigation and perseverance. As was clearly evidenced last year, Lake Ontario can and will toss up a vast array of challenging conditions for sailors to endure. Weather is always a factor and to add to the challenge negotiating and managing the shipping lanes and traffic adds to the excitement – especially at night.

Boats prepare to be out on the water for a minimum of 2 days. The fastest boat has completed the challenge in 41 hours and there is a boat registered this year which is eager to beat this record time.

More information will be provided leading up to the event.

Interviews with race participants and registration information can be arranged.

Boats are available to take photographers and media people out on the water to watch the start of this great race.
