CORK OCR – Day 4, August 23rd, 2011

Yesterday the windsurfer, RS:X and kiteboarder fleets finished their 3 day event in the CORK OCR Regatta. In the Windsurfer Gold fleet, Keith Whiston took gold, with Nick Cox following in second, and Bob Shuttleworth in third. The Windsurfer Silver fleet saw Giancarlo Brotto in first and Diane Houston in second. The RS:X fleet finished with David Hayes in first, Dominique Vallee in second and Caroline Emmanu de Alcala in third. Lastly, the youth Bic293 had a great regatta with Fannie de Alcala taking gold, Gabriel Verrier Paquette in second and Artem Lavrynenko in third. Congratulations to all!

Today marks the fourth of five days of racing at the CORK Olympic Class Regatta. This is an open class event with athletes from New Zealand, the USA, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Canada and other countries. With a beautiful windy and sunny day the athletes will have a great day of sailing.

The 49er and the 29er XX classes (some of the most exciting to watch), will have their Medal Race right off the peer at Portsmouth tomorrow, with a scheduled start time of 13:30pm. Currently the lead boats for the 49er class are three Canadian teams; Rob Frost and Tom Arbuckle, Matt Debreucq and Trevor Parekh, David Mori and Justin Barnes.

The 29er XX is leveraging this event as North American Championships. The lead boats are two USA teams; Kristen Lane and Matt Pistay, Jen Glass and John Renehan and a Canadian team, Sam Gustin and Ian Woodbury sitting in third.

The Finn class, the largest of the single handed boats, sees Greg Douglas of our Canadian Sailing Team going into today with a lead of one point over his team mate Martin Robitaille. Gordon Lamphere from the USA was sitting in third place.

The women’s Laser Radial fleet has a number of our Canadian Sailing Team members who are leading this very strong contingent. Danielle Dube, a veteran of the team, started today in the lead. Claire Merry, who had some great results in Europe this year, was sitting in second and Brenda Bowskill, the youngest of the Canadian Sailing Team, was sitting in third.

The men’s Laser fleet sees most of the men from our Canadian Sailing Team in attendance. The leader going in to today’s races was Andy Maloney from New Zealand. I am sure he is enjoying the fresh water of Kingston. Sitting in second is Chris Dold, followed closely by his team mate Lee Parkhill.

Tomorrow will be the last day of racing for CORK OCR. The Long Distance race will take place on Thursday, and the Offshore and One Design Regatta will start on Friday.
