What was once a thriving fish processing plant, that became derelict after decades of decline, will now be a permanent access point to amazing sailing.
Overall, Canada will be represented by a total of 14 teams and 28 athletes, including Sail Canada National Team members and Nova Scotia’s local favorites Antonia and Georgia Lewin-LaFrance from Chester, N.S., who won the bronze medal at the 2021 49erFX European Championships and posted the best Canadian performance ever at last year’s 49erFX World Championships with a 6th-place finish. Sail Canada Development Squad members Arie Moffat and Sam Bonin, and Ryan and Andrew Wood will also be competing.
“This is the first time we have our 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 World Championship in continental North America and we are thrilled to be in Canada,” said Ben Remocker, CEO, the 49er Class Association. “The waters around Nova Scotia are world renowned and will make a fantastic venue for this championship. As they race to see who the Paris 2024 favorites will be, much is at stake for these sailors.”

“Sailing is proud to partner with CBC Sports to promote its sport in Canada through the presentation of the 2022 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 World Championships to be held in our country at St. Margaret’s Bay, Nova Scotia,” said Don Adams, CEO, Sail Canada. “Less than two years away from the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, we want Canadians to enjoy, better understand and become better acquainted with the sport of sailing, which has a rich tradition in our country with nine Olympic and five Paralympic medals won. That will happen by seeing how our athletes train hard and are hungry to represent the country in Paris, and by watching our up-and-coming sailors fighting in these fast races filled with lots of action.”
The 2022 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 World Championships will also be streamed live on the 49er World Class Association YouTube page at www.youtube.com/user/49erSailingOffical as well as on their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/49ersailing.
