2022 Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame Inductees Announced

The Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame, Sail Canada and the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston have announced the 12 people who are part of the class of 2022 that will be inducted into the Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will take place Saturday, October 15th, 2022, at the Kingston Yacht Club, from 2 pm to 5 pm. Details regarding tickets are available below.

These are the 2022 inductees into the Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame:

-Karen Johnson: Winner of the 1985 Women’s 470 World Championships – RCYC, WVYC
-Gail Johnson: Winner of the 1985 Women’s 470 World Championships – RCYC
-Judy Lugar: Winner of the 1986 Women’s 470 World Championships – RNSYS, SMSC
-Morag McLean: Winner of the 1986 Women’s 470 World Championships – RNSYS, BBYC
-Frank McLaughlin: 1988 Olympic bronze medal winner in the Flying Dutchman – RCYC
-John Millen: 1988 Olympic bronze medal winner in the Flying Dutchman – RCYC
-Perry Connolly: Winner of the 1968 Southern Ocean Racing Conference (SORC) in Red Jacket and 1969 Canada’s Cup in Manitou – RCYC
-Gordon Fisher: Winner of the 1968 Southern Ocean Racing Conference (SORC) in Red Jacket and 1969 Canada’s Cup in Manitou – RCYC
-George Cassian: The 2nd “C” in C&C Yachts and, with George Cuthbertson, designer of Red Jacket – RCYC
-Erich Bruckmann: Builder of Red Jacket, founding member of C&C Yachts and Manager of C&C Custom Division
-George Hinterhoeller: Designer and builder of the Shark, founding member of C&C Yachts and Hinterhoeller Yachts – NOLSC
-Ian Morch: Established Belleville Marine and was a founding member of C&C Yachts – BQYC

The Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame is a collaboration between The Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame, the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston and Sail Canada. Inductees must be Canadian citizens and can be inducted in any of the three categories: sailor, technical or contributor.

For the time being, inductees are chosen by the Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame Management Committee, with representation from across the country. The selection process is based on criteria established in the CSHOF By-Laws. In the future, it is intended that the nomination process will be opened up to the sailing public.

As per the By-Laws, any Canadian sailor who wins an Olympic or a Paralympic medal, or a World Championship in an Olympic or Paralympic class is considered an automatic inductee. Six of the 12 inductees from the class of 2022 meet that criterion. The other six inductees are directly associated with the international success of the racing yacht Red Jacket and the founding of C&C Yachts. Red Jacket was donated to the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston by the late Peter Milligan.

“I am thrilled that Sail Canada, the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston and the Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame are once again recognizing a number of Canadians who have contributed greatly to sailing in Canada and internationally,” said Hugh McGugan, Chair of Sail Canada’s Board of Directors.

Sailing fans can now buy tickets for the 2022 induction ceremony to be held at the Kingston Yacht Club, 1 Maitland Street, Kingston, ON, from 2 pm to 5 pm on Saturday, October 15th, 2022.

The cost is $25 per person and includes a one-year membership to the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston. Seating will be limited to 120 people. Media will also be invited to attend. Tickets can now be purchased online at www.marmuseum.ca/cshof/2022-inductions.
