Inaugural J105 Women’s Ontario Championships coming in August

July 8, 2021

The goal of the Ontario Women’s J105 Championships is to encourage women sailors, lower the barriers and allow more women, from other fleets as well, to race a women’s regatta that is competitive but supports and develops women racing at every level.

Last fall, without even issuing a NOR we immediately had 8-9 boats committed with full crews, as well as boats asking to come from the US. With Covid restrictions and the intent of the regatta, this year we are focusing development, keeping it local and a great day on and off the water.

The event is being run by Felicity Clarke as the Regatta Chair, myself as the J105 Fleet representative, Anne Sanderson as the Race Officer, Lynne Beal as the Chief Jury and Martha Henderson as the RCYC’s RC of Fleet. All in all women at every layer of the event!

We’ve coordinated a great one day regatta and it was just as important to Felicity that the camaraderie and fun on the water will be continued on shore with music, cocktails and fun evening dinner and prizes and gifts to all the teams. We are very lucky that we have been generously supported by The Mountford Group at Scotia Wealth Management. Mike Mountford has also loaned his boat to a team of new sailors to the J105, for the event. Doug Bullock designed the logo for the Championships and the J105 fleet has contributed to a beautiful trophy.

The event will take place on Saturday August 21 in Toronto. There are presently 11 boats registered, which was our max this year due to Covid-limited numbers, but due to the great interest we see this growing next year and years to come.
