It’s official. The notice of race has been published for the Boston Yacht Club’s inaugural Michael A Mentuck Memorial Ocean race to leave Marblehead Harbor on Thursday July 8.

The race will be run this year instead of the traditional Marblehead to Halifax event which was canceled due to uncertainty surrounding crossing the U.S./Canadian border. It has been named for Michael A. Mentuck, a past Commodore of the Boston Yacht Club and honorary member of the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron.

The course is 253 miles and will stay closer to shore to make it more accessible than races further offshore.

“We’re cooking up a phenomenal race which will send sailors to Matinicus Rock off the coast of Maine. The start is moved up to Thursday evening July 8th so we can finish back at the Boston Yacht Club for a great, safe awards party” said Bruce Baker, Vice Commodore of the BYC and chairman of the race.

Race Director Karen Tenenbaum said applications are now available online. “We are hoping that skippers who had planned to compete in the Halifax will join us for this alternative event,” she said. “It is our plan to run the Mike Mentuck Memorial Race every other year once the biennial Halifax returns in 2023.”
